Fairtrade wines will make their debut at a Winex festival this year, which takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on Thursday 8 and Friday 9 September (more details at the bottom of the page). The Winex is one of the most renowned wine experiences in South Africa. It attracts a small number of visitors for a high quality wine experience offered by some of South African's most reputed cellars.
The participation in the Winex is expanding the spectrum of South African events in which Fairtrade is taking part. Since our first appearance at the Good Food & Wine Show in 2010, we have promoted our deliciously local Fairtrade certified wines in a variety of trade fairs and festivals in order to offer South Africans the opportunity to experience a wine journey that is full of meaning for both the environment and the people who grow the wine grapes.
At the Winex we will present three Fairtrade wines: Palesa, Tukulu and the newly launched Place in the Sun.
Palesa
Meaning flower in Sesotho, Palesa is a popular female African name. This name was chosen to celebrate the work of the numerous women working at the Fairtrade certified Daschbosch and Groot Eiland farms in Rawsonville, and it symbolises the mothers of the nation, pillars of strength, those who make a difference. The wines are traded by the uniWines Group and distributed locally by Selections du Cap. At the Winex, you can taste the full range, which includes Pinotage, Merlot, Sauvignon blanc and Chenin blanc.
Tukulu
Tukulu is a wine born from a BEE joint venture between Distell Ltd., a consortium of black entrepreneurs and a trust representing the Groenkloof community. The community works and is empowered at the Papkuilsfontein farm in Darling, which is also organic certified on top of Fairtrade. The wines promoted at the Winex are the Cabernet Sauvignon, the unwooded Syrah, the Sauvignon blanc and Chenin blanc.
Place in the Sun
Place in the Sun wines were recently launched in the local market, thus adding a new Fairtrade brand to the growing range of Fairtrade wines available in South African shops. Produced at the Adam Tas cellar with wine grapes from the Fairtrade certified Devon Valley Trust in Stellenbosch, Place in the Sun wines offer three reds and a white - Pinotage, Merlot, Cabernet and Sauvignon blanc - all available for tasting at the Winex.
