DEETLEFS LAUNCHES FAIRTRADE WINES

19.09.2011 - The market for Fairtrade certified wines is growing fast and an increasing number of local wineries are catching the opportunity to join the Fairtrade system and use the powerful Fairtrade label on their wines and show their commitment to sustainability and upliftment of farming communities. The latest, Deetlefs Wines Pty, became Fairtrade certified in December 2010 and just obtained the license to sell its two wine ranges - Deetlefs Winery and Rhythms of Nature - with the Fairtrade label.

Established in 1822, Deetlefs is the third oldest wine estate under ownership of the same family in South Africa. The Rhythms of Nature wine brand is however partly owned by the farm workers, who are eager to start investing the profits made with this brand, along with the Fairtrade Premium, for the education of their children and skills development programmes for themselves.

Kobus Deetlefs comments, "The project not only creates opportunities for our workers but also contributes to the future of our country".

For the time being, the new Fairtrade wines are exported to the Netherlands but we hope to see them soon in local shops!
