FAIRTRADE CITRUS PROMOTED IN NEW YORK
16.08.2010 - The promotion of Fairtrade citrus from South Africa will start from today in 16 stores across Manhattan, New York. This week-long promotion is part of an ongoing programme, Harvest for Hope, that supports initiatives for education, health care, training and child care.
South Africa is one of the biggest exporters of Fairtrade citrus products, which are grown in around 10 certified local farms. Upon sales, the farm workers receive the Fairtrade Premium that the importers pay directly to them on top of the price paid to the farmer. A research made in 2009 shows that, in South African farms, the Fairtrade Premium is spent mostly in the areas of education and training (26%), infrastructure improvement (23%) and job creation (14%).
