FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT IN THE UK BEGINS TODAY

28.02.2011 - Today begins the Fairtrade Fortnight in the UK and we with our sister organisation, the Fairtrade Foundation, lots of success for this year's campaign!

After the amazing results of last year's The Big Swap campaign, when consumers swapped more than a million usual products with Fairtrade ones, the 2011 event focuses on visually exhibiting one's commitment to Fairtrade. The Show Off Your Label campaign encourages UK consumers to literally show off their support of Fairtrade by wearing a Fairtrade t-shirt, decorate their offices and houses with Fairtrade materials, or actively promote Fairtrade products at parties - just to cite few ideas! Curious and original initiatives are also welcomed!

(Supporters can show off both fully dressed as an ice cream or fully naked!)

The aim of the campaign is to show off the importance of Fairtrade for producers and workers, the benefits of the Fairtrade Premium for farming communities an the change Fairtrade brings. This has the potential to bring more and more UK consumers to choose Fairtrade!

In 2010, sales of Fairtrade godds in the UK - the largest consumer market for Fairtrade products, which accounts for more than a quarter of global sales - have broken the £ 1bn (ZAR 11.3 billions!) barrier despite fears that recessionary pressures would persuade British consumers to put price before ethics. Launching Fairtrade Fortnight, the Fairtrade Foundation said that on a daily basis Britons now consumer 9.3 millions cups of tea and 3.1 millions bananas stamped with the Fairtrade mark.
