FAIRTRADE GRINDERS MADE IN SA
08.06.2010 - In May 2010, the first shipment of Fair Trade Original branded and Fairtrade certified spice grinders left South Africa, destined to the market in the Netherlands. The grinders are not new to the Dutch market - they have been a firm favourite since they were first launched in 2006 (in 2009 over 95.000 of these 2 grinders were sold in the Netherlands) - what is new is the Fairtrade seal.
The South African Turqle Trading developed those products locally with the Cape Herb and Spice Company. After many years of negotiations up and down the supply chain, it was finally possible for Turqle Trading to source Fairtrade certified raw materials from India and, therefore, to apply the Fartrade Label on the products. The grinders will be traded and distributed by Fair Trade Original, one of the oldest fair trading organisations in Europe, established in 1959.
This deal brings huge benefits not only to the raw materials producers in India, who received the added income guaranteed by Fairtrade standards, but also to the South African workers of the Cape Herb and Spice Company through their Fair Trade Trust. The Fair Trade Trust, established by Fair Trade Original and Turqle Trading to benefit the workers at the various factories that make Fairtrade products, pays the school fees of the workers' children and sponsors a variety of training programs for the staff as well as bursaries for individuals.
