MICHELANGELO WINE AWARDS ADDS FAIRTRADE TROPHIES

21.06.2011 - We are glad to welcome the announcement by the management of the Michelangelo International Wine Awards regarding the introduction of two exciting new trophies to this year's line-up, namely Best Fairtrade Red and Best Fairtrade White. The trophies are sponsored by Pick n Pay, who actively supports the growth of Fairtrade in South Africa.

Lorraine Immelman, Michelangelo director, says, "The Pick n Pay trophies have been created to encourage the participation of Fairtrade-endorsed wines and by implication to encourage producers to become part of the Fairtrade initiative. We are thrilled about the involvement of both Fairtrade and Pick n Pay and the opportunities this will potentially create for local winemakers."

Boudewijn Goossens, FLSA executive director, comments, "We are very excited to announce that Fairtrade wines can now be awarded two dedicated Michelangelo trophies. This will certainly boost the awareness and sales of local Fairtrade wines globally and in South Africa."

Bronwen Rohland, director of marketing and sustainable development at Pick n Pay, says, "With more that 700 stores around the country we aim to be a key player in the creation of a Fairtrade market in South Africa, as well as in the promotion of new local and regional Fairtrade supply chains, whereby we ensure the feasibility and sustainability of local farmers who have traditionally battled to find viable markets."

Wine is one of the biggest Fairtrade product category in South Africa with almost forty businesses involved in Fairtrade winemaking. Currently, over 15 sell their Fairtrade labelled wines in the local market. In 2010, Fairtrade wines accounted for over half of the estimated sales of Fairtrade in South Africa, which soared to R 18.4 million up from the R 5.7 million in 2009.
