THE BENEFITS OF A PLACE IN THE SUN

14.07.11 -We are happy to announce that a new wine brand was introduced in the South African market, thus increasing the number of Fairtrade labelled wines available to local consumers. A Place in the Sun, marketed by Distell and produced by the Fairtrade certified Devon Valley Trust in Stellenbosch, has appeared in Pick n Pay with its four varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.

As is the norm with purchasing a Fairtrade products, an amount is contributed to the workers fund which goes towards investments in the farming communities that grow the Fairtrade grapes. In an article published today by IOL, cellar master Deon Boschoff - originally from Grabouw and son of farm workers, explains how Fairtrade has already contributed to upgrade the créche where farm workers send their children and to purchase a series of school materials necessary for the youth, such as books, uniforms and sport kits. "When the people who are growing and harvesting the grapes know they are a valued and integral part of winemaking, they take extra care and it shows in the grape quality. It is this sense of care that I try capturing by letting the fruit characters come through in the wines - it is my way of honouring their role," he says.

The Place in the Sun range is refreshing and approachable, and it joins other Fairtrade wines at your local Pick n Pay retail stores. The Place in the Sun Sauvignon Blanc 2011 (retail price: R35) is crisp and fruity, while the reds (all R45) are soft-textured and bursting with red berry fruits.

"It has shaped who I am...for me to be able to make wine that plays a part in transforming the lives of other people from a similar background is a massive reward," concludes Boschoff.
