Food Miles and Fairtrade (December 2011)
This paper, published by Fairtrade International, looks at the concept of food miles, namely the distance food travels from producer to consumers, and argues that buying low carbon footprint products (in Northern countries) is not always the best solution to fight poverty and climate change.
Monitoring the Scope and Benefits of Fairtrade (December 2011) - Part 1: Introduction / Part 2: All data
Compiled by Fairtrade International, this report refers to data collected between March 2010 and February 2011 from 869 producer organisations (94% of all Fairtrade certified producers). The data show that Fairtrade is performing well and growing rapidly in some areas, while indicating other areas where we have challenges to overcome. Being aware of these challenges allows us to reshape our programme activities in order to tackle them.
Fairtrade Bananas: a Global Assessment of Impact (November 2011)
This report was commissioned to the Institute of Development Studies (University of Sussex, UK) and focuses on Fairtrade banana producers. Fairtrade bananas account for 20% of the total UK banana market with retailers such as Marks & Spencer offering over 50% of their bananas as Fairtrade. The research involved three Fairtrade small producer organisations (co-operatives) and three Fairtrade plantations in four locations: Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Ghana and the Windward Islands. Farmers, traders, farm workers and communities were interviewed during 2010. See a summary of the findings here or download the full document by clicking on the title above.
Fairtrade Impact Assessment: Gikanda Farmers Cooperative, Kenya (May 2011)
This research was compiled by Africa Now, a consultancy company that works across Africa studying small-scale farming. The study identifies and analyses the impacts of the Fairtrade business model for the Gikanda Farmers Cooperative Society Ltd. Established in 1996 in the Mathira East District (120km North of Nairobi, Kenya), Gitikanda achieved Fairtrade certification for coffee beans in 2006 and currently has over 2,700 members.
The Great Cotton Stitch-Up (November 2010)
With an average GDP per capita of $637 and among the least developed countries on earth, Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali (known as the Cotton-4 or C-4) rely on cotton for most of their export revenues. Production is much cheaper that in developing countries - a perfect competitive advantage for those poor farmers. However, a wall of subsidies is fatally undermining the C-4's ability to trade their way out of poverty. This report, compiled by the Fairtrade Foundation, analyzes the situation of global cotton trade and offers recommendations for a fairer trading system.
Impacts of Fairtrade in South Africa (June 2010)
This briefing paper is drawn from an independent research study carried out in 2010 exploring the impacts that Fairtrade is having for five Fairtrade certified producer organisations in South Africa that sell Fairtrade citrus, table grapes, wine, apples, pears and raisins to the UK and other countries. The research was carried out by the Sustainable Livelihoods Consultants (SLC) for the Fairtrade Foundation.
Egalite', Fraternite', Sustainabilite': Why the Climate Revolution must be a Fair Revolution (October 2009)
A discussion paper commissioned by the Fairtrade Foundation to explore ways in which Fairtrade can positively contribute to supporting farmers in adapting to climate change.

This document is based on case studies carried out in the Dominican Republic, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia with small-scale producers of coffee, cocoa, mangoes and bananas.
The Global Food Crisis and Fairtrade (February 2009)
The world is facing increasing population growth, higher food prices, production shortfalls, extreme price volatility, lack of investments in agriculture from governments in developing countries. Fairtrade's approach to the global food crisis is explained in this report compiled by the Fairtrade Foundation.
Fairtrade: Poverty Reduction & Conflict Resolution (June 2007)
